Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The aim of our study is to examine the parameters known to affect stability and balance in Multiple Sclerosis patients, and to compare the results with healthy controls. Besides Romberg 's test which is determinative of balance disorders in patients with MS to determine changes in the parameters affecting the balance according to + or - the status of the it.METHODS: The study included 17 patients with multiple sclerosis and 18 healthy controls. Balance was assessed by the Romberg 's test, Expanded Disability Status Scale and Berg Balance Scale. Also cognitive, physical performance tests, physical activity level, timed walking test, and depression levels were also measured which are known to affect the balance in MS patients.RESULTS: There were meaningful differences between Multiple Sclerosis patients and healthy controls in favor of healthy controls; for physical performance, balance measurements, physical and psychological lower parameters of fatigue. There were also meaningful differences between Multiple Sclerosis patients for the Expanded Disability Status Scale, dexterity, performance testing, balance, and physical parameter of fatigue when they were grouped as Romberg + and - . Also there were negative coreleations between Expanded Disability Status Scale, Romberg, physical and psychological parameters of fatigue with Berg Balance Scale; and positive coreleations between Romberg and Berg Balance Scale.DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It has been shown that there were differences for disability level, dexterity, balance, physical performance and physical fatigue in Multiple Sclerosis patients who grouped as Romberg + and - . I’s thought that The Romberg balance test is supervising and additional tests are required.
