Abstract

The movement of Romanticism, which was influential in the 19th century of Germany, brought many innovations in the field of music after the Classical period. Innovations in the field of music also enabled the German Violin School to find its essence as it has led to many changes in violin playing. Therefore, 19th century can be regarded as a golden era for German Violin School. The very reasons for German Violin School having experienced such an age can be explained not only with the changes in music but also with the influence of the 19th century violinist. Ferdinand David is one of the outstanding violinists in this period. The well-known violinist was born in 1810 in Hamburg and started his violin education with Louis Spohr who was also one of the most important figures of this period. As a result of studying with Louis, he gave many concerts in many cities as a soloist and he became famous in his country at an early age. David is also a close friend to Mendelssohn. During their years long friendship, they strived for the improvement of German music. The city of Leipzig gained importance in the field of music thanks to the directorship of Mendelssohn and to David leading to the violins of in Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Their contributions for the Leipzig Conservatory also ensured to convey the music of the city to the next generations. Ferdinand David is mostly referred to with his composition today. The performings of his concertino for trombone which he had composed in 1837 is one of the reasons to be remembered with his compositions. Furthermore, the lack of sources about his life and his performings make his way of composition more prominent. It is considered that Ferdinand David who is one of the creators of the German Violin School which had affected many poliphonic music performings of many countries had significant effects on violin education and its performance. These effects along with Ferdinand David’s life will be under close scrutiny in this study.
