Compassion, which is a humanitarian value and reaches its deepest meaning with man, is gradually moving away from every field of life and society, beginning to be forgotten and loses its importance. Witnessing that all kinds of violence replace this nice feeling is both upsetting and horrible. The only way and instrument of getting rid of this situation is “compassion education.” In this context, purpose of this study is to understand the real meaning of the concept of compassion in Koran; to state the importance of the concepts such as man, compassion, education and virtue and to emphasize the fact that virtuous behaviors can be shown only by educating the feelings such as love, affection and compassion. This requires togetherness of “compassion” and “education”; in other words, compassion education. Compassion education adopts man’s treating all creatures with affection and helpfulness, loving, protecting and supporting and at the same time, forgiving all creatures and similar virtuous behaviors as principle.
“Rahmet (mercy)”, “ruhm” ve “merhamet (compassion)” are synonymous with each other. Root meanings of these words express feeling of affection and tenderheartedness, sharing one’s sorrow and problem, showing interest and affection, having compassion, protecting and showing kindness. Mercy is an emotional principle and generally, desire of the heart and conscience to help and lavish something on someone, bring beneficence and expel evil. Affection, which expresses this desire and wish, is used not as a static but dynamic, active and functional concept in Koran. In other words, effective area of affection is not only heart and conscience of man but the entire universe.
Man was created with the feeling of affection, which is a potential power. This feeling is coded into the nature of human being by God; integrated with his nervous system and in a way, it is coded in his genes. Affection feeling can be displayed through family, environment and education or completely ignored. Bio-archeological researches and studies such as functional mr and discovery of mirror neurons have proven that bio-chemical roots of compassion, affection and mercy feelings are available in human brain. Once these feelings become active, happiness hormone called “inner morphine” such as endorphin and serotonin have been observed to be released in human brain. This points out that man is prone to affection by nature. History is witness of this reality as well. History of humanity, which has started with the prophet Adam (peace be upon him) has taken shape according to the preferences of the “good” and” “evil” inside man; and Habil and Kabil (sons of the prophet Adam) outside man and history of humanity has become the arena of those who are compassionate and those who are merciless.
