Peer Disagreement, Religious Belief and Skepticism

Abstract

Various approaches have been proposed as to how we should deal with disagreement among epistemic peers about religious beliefs. One of these proposals comes from the conciliatory view put forward by thinkers such as Feldman and Christensen. According to this view, the fact that we are confronted with a peer disagreement about a belief entails a reduction of confidence in that belief or a suspension of the judgment. In other words, these thinkers consider the peer disagreement as a threat to the epistemic basis of religious belief. In this paper, first, I will discuss the main claims of the conciliationist view and try to identify its implications for religious beliefs. Second, I will argue that it is far from being a convincing argument, given the criticisms against it, especially the skepticism objection.

Denklerin İhtilafı, Dinî İnanç ve Şüphecilik

Abstract

Dinî inançlarına yönelik bir denk ihtilafının ortaya çıkması durumunda, kişinin buna nasıl bir karşılık vermesi gerektiğiyle ilgili olarak çeşitli yollar önerilmiştir. Bu önerilerden biri, Feldman ve Christensen gibi düşünürler tarafından ileri sürülen uzlaştırmacı görüşten gelir. Buna göre, bir inançla ilgili denk ihtilafının ortaya çıkması, söz konusu inanca karşı duyulan güvenin azaltılmasını ya da bu inanca yönelik hükmün askıya alınmasını gerektirir. Diğer bir ifadeyle, bu düşünürler, denk ihtilafını sahip olunan dinî inancın epistemik temellerine yönelik bir darbe olarak kabul eder. Bu çalışmada, ilk olarak, uzlaştırmacı görüşün ana iddiaları ele alınarak onun dinî inançlara yönelik imaları tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır. İkinci olarak, bu görüşün barındırdığı şüpheci öz başta olmak üzere birçok noktadan eleştiriye açık olduğu ve bu eleştiriler göz önüne alındığında, onun ikna edici bir argüman olmaktan uzak kaldığı iddia edilecektir.
