Mahmoud Shukair, one of the living political and
literary figures of the Palestinian resistance, was born in 1941 in the village
of Jabal Mukaber in the southeast of Jerusalem. He spent his entire life
resisting the Palestinian occupation in terms of both political and literary,
embracing his country's cause. His political activities have never failed to
undermine his literary production. Because, he managed to balance the two extreme
areas of politics and literature. In 1961, copies of New Horizon
magazine came to the institution he worked. His long journey in literature
which will last till today, especially in the genre of story starts through the
acquaintance with this magazine. Shukair's first story Night and Thieves
was published in New Horizon magazine in 1963. As can be seen in
the story of The Bread of Others, which is the subject of this
study, the material of the author's stories consists of particularly the role
of Palestinian women in daily life, the difficulties they faces and the
proletariat, the rural part of the country.
