Abstract

Abstract
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of surgical face masks is recommended by the authorities to protect individual and social health. However, there are few studies showing how the use of masks in different types of exercise affects people. In this context, the aim of this study is to evaluate the exercises performed with and without masks in terms of rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in women who do pilates exercises. Thirty women (age 26.1 ± 0.98 years, height 166.6 ± 1.37cm, body weight 57.3 ± 1.29kg) who regularly do pilates exercises participated in the study voluntarily. This was a multiple cross-over trial of healthy volunteers. All participants performed 45 minutes of pilates exercises two days apart at the same intensity, with or without a surgical mask. During the with and without mask exercise, the RPE scores of the participants were recorded every 5 minutes. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine whether the numerical variables were normally distributed, and the Paired Samples T-Test to determine whether there was a difference between the groups. In the evaluation, no significant difference was found on the RPE score at the 5th and 10th minutes while a significant difference was detected in every 5 minutes from the 10th minute to the 45th minute. It can be said that pilates exercises performed with masks create more exercise intensity than performed without a mask.
