Abstract
Amir Nogai took to the stage of history with his commanding role at the Battle of Terek that occurred between the Golden Horde and the Ilkhanate. Although the Battle did not begin in favour of the Golden Horde, Amir Nogai managed to win the Battle and became influential in the Golden Horde for a long period. Amir Nogai proved his military capability and experience by leading his army to victory at the Battle of Terek with. From the Battle of Terek on, he appeared in many successful military endeavours of the Golden Horde. Amir Nogai took an active role in the Balkan affairs of the Golden Horde and through his military and political presence, he managed to keep this region under Mongolian dominance throughout his life. In particular, Nogai began to be an influential figure during the period of Mengu-Timur of the Golden Horde. Although he failed to be a khan of the State, Amir Nogai had great influence on the administration of the Golden Horde. So much so that Amir Nogai became strong enough to mint coin on his behalf in İsaccea and established a political organisation that would be known as Nogai’s Horde. In 1291, Amir Nogai was killed by Toqta Khan of the Golden Horde despite the fact that Nogai had helped him to ascend to the throne. Following his death, his sons Taka and Chaka could not succeed to pursue a successful policy of influence like their father and both died in succession. The main focus of this study is the political and military affairs of Amir Nogai. This study extensively uses primary sources of the topic to better examine the role that Amir Nogai assumed in the Golden Horde’s domestic and foreign policy.
