Abstract
The understanding of Modern architecture, which emerged at the end of the 19th century, led to the beginning of a new architectural period with the Industrial Revolution. Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, one of the pioneers of this new era which developed in the West, has introduced the minimalist design understanding which is also known with the discourse of “Less is more”. This concept of design is also the basis of Japanese traditional architecture. This study is an investigation of whether there is an influence of the Japanese architectural tradition in the modern architectural movement that developed in the west. Within the scope of this study, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe (1886 - 1969), which has an important place in the history of architecture, is researched on the design concept. While conducting the research, the studies of Zimmerman (2006) and Cambra (2014) on Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe were examined firstly, and then these studies were positioned in terms of contemporary approaches for the writing of architectural history. As a result of the investigations, although there are similar features in modern movement and traditional Japanese architecture, it was observed that there was no mention to the effect of Japanese traditional architecture in Mies Van Der Rohe studies.
