THE EVALUATION OF THE RETAINED ROOT FRAGMENTS IN THE JAW BONES OF THE TURKISH POPULATION: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Year 2017, Volume: 1 Issue: 3, 66 - 71, 18.12.2017

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of
this retrospective study was to investigate the retained root fragments on the
toothless spaces, in a group of patients living in Turkey, by examining the
files and panoramic radiographies of the patients.

Materials and Method: 248 patients were included into this
study. Totally 2022 toothless spaces were examined on panoramic radiographs
retrospectively. Data about the patients was also obtained from the patients’
files. Frequency of the retained root fragments in the toothless area and their
distribution according to the presence on the upper or lower jaw,
anterior-premolar and molar areas and the sex of the patient were evaluated on
the panoramic radiographs. The patient files were also evaluated to determine
whether an extraction is necessary.

Result: Totally 56 (2.8 %) remained tooth fragments
were found on the 2022 toothless area. No statistically significant was found
in terms of frequency of their occurrence on the upper and lower jaws. Remained
tooth fragments were found statistically more frequent in females than the males
and in the molar area than the anterior-premolar (p<0.05) area. 4 (7.14%) out
of 56 remained root fragments needed to be extracted.

Conclusion:  The frequency of retained tooth fragments
was found as 2.8% on the toothless area that resulted from tooth extraction.
Retained root fragments were seen more in women and in molar region. In 7.14%
of them an extraction procedure was necessary.

TÜRK POPULASYONUN DA ÇENE KEMİKLERİNDE KALMIŞ KÖK PARÇALARININ DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ: RETROSPEKTİF ÇALIŞMA

Year 2017, Volume: 1 Issue: 3, 66 - 71, 18.12.2017
