Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the limit of takfir and tolerance in the context of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali's views. In the study, the issue of takfir and the field of religious freedom in the case of Ghazali are discussed with the method of source analysis. The categorical distinction between belief and unbelief is the most basic classification that reflects people's religious preferences. The definition and limits of faith in Islam are clear. Takfir is made up of words and actions that are contrary to belief. Takfir, which means cutting off a person's relationship with the religion of Islam and giving her the judgment of unbelief, has been a means of excluding other religious groups from history to the present. The phenomenon of takfir, which we could not see in the time of the Prophet, emerged mostly on political grounds in the later periods of Islamic history. This aspect of the subject has prompted Islamic scholars to write works on the conditions of takfir. The literature on takfîr can be indirectly read as a warning of thinkers to people. One of the works written on this issue is Ghazâlî's work called Faysalü't-Tefrika. He examined the conditions and limits of takfir and based on tolerance while doing this. Ghazali made the imposition of an exclusionary judgment, such as takfir on harsh conditions. When his and other scholars' views on this subject are examined, it is understood that takfir cannot be a way to legitimize political marginalization and destruction.
