Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a perspective on the Macedonian Kingdom of Philippos II through stressing both its emergence as a regional power, which was subsequently transformed into a world empire with Alexander the Great’s conquests, and its role in regional affairs until Alexander’s accession to the throne. The Macedonians gathered the Ancient Greeks into a unified element against the Persian threat and after its expansion towards the east the Macedonians enabled the mixture of the eastern and western cultures, thereby changed the course of history. In addition to the success of the Macedonian Kingdom in conquering the Greek states, this study also focuses on its administrative system which served as a prototype for subsequent Hellenistic Kingdoms. The topography of Macedonia and the origins of the people who gave their names to the place are briefly discussed to enable a better understanding of the factors behind the rise of the Macedonian Kingdom and this study focuses upon Philippos II and his reign to indicate some reasons for the revolutionary changes made to the military, the administration and the economy.
