Examination of the Relationship Between Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies and Depression

Year 2024, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 75 - 88, 30.06.2024

Abstract

Depression is an important psychological disorder that is common in society and negatively affects a person's life. It has been reported that cognitive processes are an important factor in the depression process. There have been few studies on this subject in our country. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to review the findings of studies examining the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depression, and to present information about which strategies are associated with depression and which ones are used frequently. In this study; various English and Turkish resources written between 2012 and 2022 were searched using Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Dergipark databases. While selecting the articles, focus was on the research question of whether there is a relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depression. In the research articles examined, it was found that there was a significant and strong relationship between cognitive emotion regulation and depression. In particular, frequent use of strategies like rumination, catastrophizing, self-blame, and blaming others was positively and significantly correlated with depression (increasing the level of depression), while more frequent use of strategies like positive reappraisal, positive refocusing and planning refocusing was negatively correlated with depression (increasing the level of depression). These findings were repeated in the studies. For this reason, it is thought that this study, which explains the relationships between cognitive emotion regulation and depression, will make an important contribution to the prevention and treatment of depression.

Bilişsel Duygu Düzenleme Stratejileri ile Depresyon Arasındaki ilişkinin İncelenmesi

Year 2024, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 75 - 88, 30.06.2024
