Abstract
Nowadays, rapidly declining clean water resources are affecting the living creatures and the environment negatively. There are certain reasons for the reduction of clean water resources. Some of these reasons are the effects of global warming in different parts of the world, inaccuracies in the use of water together with the increasing population in the world, and the inefficient use of water resources in the agricultural and industrial sectors. Firstly, effective and conscious use of existing clean water resources should be the most important goal for human beings. The fact that a very large proportion of the water reserves on the earth is composed of non-sweet water (sea water), reveals the importance of desalination systems and increases the development of desalination system. The simplest and most widely used system is the humidificationdehumidification desalination (HDH) system. In this study, a HDH desalination system assisted with solar energy and ground source heat exchanger was designed. Main component of the system are humidification (water tower) and dehumidification (condenser) unit, solar collectors, heat exchangers, pumps and fan. A model was developed to perform detailed thermodynamic analysis of the system and the properties of all points in the system were analytically calculated by using Fortran Programming Language. In this study, the effect of solar energy on the performance of the designed system was investigated and the results were evaluated.
