Abstract

VI.

THE SACRED WAR NARRATIVE IN TAKTIKA ATTRIBUTED TO THE BYZANTINE EMPEROR LEO VI (886-912)

Abstract

The military handbook named Taktika, attributed to Leo VI, was written to provide generals with some information about the army, equipment and strategy. However, the content of the work is not limited to this. The subtext of the work actually includes the ideal state carefully formulated by the emperor and the qualities of the ideal generals of this state. The generals and army of this state are responsible for protecting the believers in the world from the persecution of the anti-Christ before the second coming of the Messiah and welcoming the Messiah on earth. However, the practical implementation of this duty will be possible with the formula of sanctifying war in the Byzantine Empire. In this article, it has been examined under what emphases and conditions the holy or sanctified war, which the Byzantine Empire has not yet experienced, is included in the subtext of Taktika. At the same time the theoretical and practical implications of the notion of holy war in Leon's ideal state have also been investigated. The study thus will also reveal the invisible reasons why emperor wrote a military manual.
