Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of vitamin-mineral and herbal products use on health workers.
METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted on 1017 healthcare workers working in İzmir. Sociodemographic features, health status, lifestyle habits and dietary supplement use of participants were recorded with a questionnaire form.
RESULTS: 81.4% (n= 828) of participants were woman, 18.6% (n=189) were man, and the mean age was 37.72±10.28 years. It was determined that 12.6% of individuals used herbal products, while 24.9% used vitamin-mineral. A significant relationship has been determined between herbal product use and dieting (p<0.001), adequate and balanced nutrition (p=0.026), regular physical activity (p=0.027) and occupation (p<0.001). There was a significant relationship between vitamin-mineral use and age (p=0.019), marital status (p= 0.034), presence of chronic disease (p<0.001), regular drug use (p<0.001), and occupation (p<0.001). Herbal mixtures (13.3%) and multivitamin-minerals (28.5%) were the most commonly preferred supplements by participants. It was found that herbal products (39.8%) were most commonly used to strengthen the immune system while vitamin-mineral supplements (64.4%) were most often used due to deficiency. While majority of herbal product user (61.9%) started using the product without any advice; more than half of vitamin-mineral user (56.0%) started using the product with the advice of a doctor.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It has been determined that the use of vitamin-mineral among healthcare professionals is more common than herbal products. Besides, the use of these dietary supplements (herbal products and vitamin-mineral) is associated with different socio-demographic characteristics and lifestyle habits.

Year 2020, Volume: 34 Issue: 2, 141 - 151, 31.08.2020
