The Great Seljuk vizier Nizam al-Mulk was prominent with his science and Sufi skills in addition to his administrative skills. He continued his science education, which he had begun in his family circle, in Tus, Nishapur, Khorasan, and Ghazni. He fought against Shiite and Batini groups, and took an active role in the appeasement of internal sectarian conflicts within Sunni tradition. As a person with interest in Sufism, Nizam al-Mulk made efforts for the domination of the understanding of Sunni Sufism in the government and society. He was the contemporary of several significant figures of sufism such as Abu Said Abu’l-Khayr, Abu’l-Qasim Abdulkarim al-Kushayri, Abu Ishaq ash-Shirazi, Imamu’l-Haramayn al-Juwayni, and Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, and he highly valued them. The person whom Nizam al-Mulk valued most was surely Abu Ali al-Farmadi. Farmadi was the sheikh of Nizam al-Mulk. There is inconsistent information on Nizam al-Mulk in primary sources. It is seen that mostly Nizam al-Mulk’s administrative characteristics are discussed in current studies. In this study, the scientific personality of Nizam al-Mulk, his attitudes towards Sufis, his relations with Sufis, and his sheikh Abu Ali al-Farmadi will be addressed together with his life.
