Some works narrated by his students on the Islamic creed are attributed to Abū Ḥanīfa. The most famous of these is al-Fiqh al-akbar. However, although there is not a single work under the name of al-Fiqh al-akbar even if it is mentioned under the same name in the sources, there are two different texts one of which is narrated by his student Abū Muṭī al-Balkhī and the other one is narrated by his son Ḥammād. The fact that these two different texts are referred to with the same name has created the problem of which text is meant in the references to the work. Also, the commentaries (sharḥs) written on the work caused confusion about which text was commented, and even sometimes wrong evaluations were made. This study, being aware of the problematic situation in question tries to determine the first sharḥ written on al-Fiqh al-akbar narrated by Ḥammād. As a result of the findings obtained, it reaches that the first sharḥ(s) on the work were written in the 9th/15th century and then makes some suggestions, focusing on the possible reasons why al-Fiqh al-akbar was commented after about seven centuries for the first time.
