İbn Abdülber el-İstî‘âb fî ma‘rifeti’l-ashâb Tercümesi Mustafa Sâfî Efendi Taşköprîzâde Kemâleddin Mehmed Efendi Sahâbe biyografileri.
al-Isti‘ab fi Ma‘rifat al-Ashab, written by Ibn Abd al-Barr al-Namari al-Qurtubi (d. 463 / 1071), is a very voluminous work that contains the biographies of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). This study, considered as one of the first companion biographies to survive, was written in Arabic in the middle of the 10th century AD. Although the first translation of the study into Ottoman Turkish was started at the beginning of the 17th century by Mustafa Sâfî Efendi at the request of Ahmed I, according to our current knowledge, the translation was left unfinished after the translator’s death. Taşköprîzâde Kemâleddin Mehmed Efendi wanted to continue the translation study, which Sâfî started to prepare according to the Arabic alphabet and brought up to the letter kh “خ”, but he was able to bring up to the half of the letter ra “ر”. In this article, the index of the names of the companions will be presented together with the introduction of the manuscript of al-Istî‘âb fî Ma‘rifat al-Ashâb Translation at the Nuruosmaniye Library number 723. In this way, it is aimed to reveal the content and form features of the first and only al-Istî‘âb translation in Ottoman Turkish and to have information about the biographies of the companions in it.
