Speech competence, which is the most concrete indicator of knowing a foreign language but is ignored in foreign language education, can be defined as an individual’s ability to use that language fluently and effectively in varying communicative situations in a suitable manner to the topic, situation and the partner and the ability to maintain communication in that language without problems. The acquisition and progress of speech skill causes a significant problem for the students at the departments of German Language and Literature as well as German Language Education who learn German as a second foreign language after English in Turkey. Based on this fact, this study aims to analyse the progress of pragmatic and discursive competence of the students who learn German as a second language after English to form a whole through corpus-based data collected via a longitudinal study (between 2011-2014).
In the experimental part of the study the corpus-based data was extracted from 20 exam and control speeches of 5 to 20 minute length applied to 8 students at the German Language and Literature department of Ege University Faculty of Letters and this data has been transcribed according to “the discourse and conversation-analytic transcription system” (GAT-2). According to the criteria of the progress of pragmatic and discursive competence have been analysed on one exam and 2 control speeches and then the quantitative data of the study has been collected, and thus the progress in 3 years was determined. The study reveals that the pragmatic and discursive competence of the students of the German Language and Literature Department who took part in the study as subjects did not improve significantly over the three years of undergraduate education following their first year at the university solely through attending courses.
