Abstract
Mosses have been known for many years to be effective against diseases and they are successfully used in areas such as treating wounds and fighting infections. In this study, ethyl alcohol extracts of Plagiomnium elatum (Bruch & Schimp.) T.J.Kop., Rhynchostegium megapolitanum (Blandow. ex F. Weber & D. Mohr) Schimp, Tortella bambergeri (Schimp.) Broth and Tortella tortuosa (Hedw.) Limpr were tested using disk diffusion method on a total of 18 microorganisms, 8 gram positive, 9 gram negative bacteria and 1 yeast, and their antimicrobial activities were determined. As a result of the disk diffusion test, it was demonstrated that all moss samples had antimicrobial activity against several strains, but they had significant antimicrobial activities especially on gram positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and gram negative Escherichia coli ATCC 25922.
