Abstract
Many architects have treated natural light as a design element and used it differently and uniquely throughout history. Advances in technology and materials have led to the emergence of new systems and applications, providing us with alternative ways to use natural light as a design element. Jean Nouvel, an architect who is famous for the systems and structures he used in his recent designs, hasprovided original examples of his effective use of daylight. This paper focused on Jean Nouvel's designs because they are an important source of data in terms of the effect of an architectural structure on spaces, the significance of natural light in design, and the way light is let in and used there. The study included a diagram keeping track of the general trends of how Jean Nouvel used natural light as a design element. For this, the study addressed his buildings where he uses daylight effectively. With such elements as dynamic play of light/shadow and patterns on surfaces, the natural light gives a sense ofcharacterand meaning to space and helps it integrate with the building. The dynamism and experiential fictions evoked by natural light allow users to associate the building with light. In the same way, the transposing role of light and the diversity it brings to spaces make it one of their building blocks.
