Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a harmful species on Buxus spp. that is used as outdoor ornamental plants in parks and gardens. C. perspectalis is originated from the East Asia and it is an invasive species for Turkey. This species has been detected in Germany and Netherland for the first time in Europe in 2007. C. perspectalis were found on the leaves of Buxus sempervirens ve B. sempervirens cv ‘aureavariegata’ species in Istanbul in 2007. Since the spring months 2015, insect damage has been observed on B. sempervirens in the central province of Duzce.
Because of pest species at pupal stage, pupa samples and damaged parts of plants has been brought to the Duzce University Faculty of Forestry, Laboratory of Forest Entomology and Protection. Collected pupa samples were placed in an insect rearing cage for adult emergence under constant conditions. Photos of damaged plant parts were taken. Only one pupae out of four was emerged as an adult and identification process was carried out.
In addition, the type of damages on plant parts were compared with data in the literature. In conclusion, this insect species was identified as Cydalima perspectalis. This is the first report of C. perspectalis from Duzce. It has a potential to be an important pest on B. sempervirens used in city parks and gardens in Duzce. To control the spread of the pest, periodic monitoring of the population and preventive measures should be carried out.
