Abstract
Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar is one of the writers introduced to the world of literature by Ahmet Mithat Efendi. It is possible to see the traces of a satirical and humorous point of view in both the literary works and writings of Gürpınar, who started his literary life in the 1880s and continued his writing activities until his death in 1944. We know that the author wrote a dialogue titled "Istiğrak-ı Seherî" in 1886 to criticize romantic literature based on Menemenlizade Mehmet Tahir's long story titled Sergüzeşt. Accordingly, we should once again emphasize the thesis that he wrote İffet in 1896 to be compared to Vecihî's novels. On the other hand, these years correspond to the period when the representatives of Servet-i Fünun came together after the writers of the "Transition Generation", in which romantic literature attracted a lot of attention, and stepped into a new literary formation. It is a well-known fact that Hüseyin Rahmi, like his master Ahmet Mithat Efendi, engaged in polemics with the Servet-i Fünuncular or distanced himself from them.
In this study, we will evaluate Gürpınar's novels İffet, which is claimed to be written to resemble the novels of Vecihî, who is known for imitating Namık Kemal's style, Metres, which includes discussions on "Decadence", "Realism-Romanticism", and Cehennemlik, which is seen as a parody of Aşk-ı Memnu by some critics.
