Short History of Podcast: Birth, Rise, Monetization

Abstract

Podcast is a tool that was developed in the beginning of 2000s, with the development of software that enables the circulation of audio files, for radio programs to take place on the Internet and reach more listeners. Inexpensive podcast production opportunities attracted many amateur broadcasters and media professionals, and content production boomed in a short time. Developing technology and mobile communication tools have also helped spread the podcast. The podcast, which has emerged as a free broadcast, has become popular and has gained the power to attract the attention of the masses and has started to receive advertisement and sponsor support. Thus, paid content started to be offered on podcast platforms following the mid-2010s and podcasts are fully monetized. In this article, the emergence, development and monetization of podcast broadcasting are discussed on the basis of the possibilities of internet and computer technology, which constitute the infrastructure of podcasts. Advertising market data created in podcast publishing, the economic size that podcast production and broadcasting companies emerged and reached, and the high amounts paid during the purchases in the sector were used as data in the study. In the study, the studies on podcast and audio broadcasting were examined, a literature review was made and a situation analysis was made by bringing together the current data. In the study, the emergence and development stages of podcasts, which emerged as a new communication tool, and economic appreciation processes were tried to be understood.

Podcast’in Kısa Tarihi: Doğuşu, Yükselişi, Monetizasyonu

Abstract

Podcast 2000’li yılların başında ses dosyalarının dolaşımını mümkün kılan yazılımların geliştirilmesiyle, radyo programlarının internette yer alması ve daha fazla dinleyiciye ulaşması için ortaya çıkmış bir araçtır. Podcast yapım imkanlarının ucuz olması pek çok amatör yayıncıyı ve medya profesyonelini cezbetmiş ve kısa sürede içerik üretiminde yaşanmıştır. Gelişen teknoloji ve mobil iletişim araçları da podcastin yaygınlaşmasına yardım etmiştir. Ücretsiz bir yayın olarak ortaya çıkan podcast yaygınlaşıp geniş kitlelerin ilgisini toplama gücünü kazanmasıyla birlikte reklam ve sponsor desteği almaya başlamıştır. Böylelikle, 2010’lu yılların ortasından sonra ücretli içerikler podcast platformlarında sunulmaya başlanmış ve podcastler tam anlamıyla monetize olmuşlardır. Bu makalede podcast yayıncılığının ortaya çıkışı, gelişmesi ve monetize olması podcaste altyapı oluşturan internet ve bilgisayar teknolojisinin imkanları temelinde ele alınmıştır. Podcast yayıncılığında oluşan reklam piyasası verileri, podcast yapım ve yayın şirketlerinin ortaya çıkıp eriştikleri ekonomik büyüklük, sektörde yaşanan satın almalar sırasında ödenen yüksek rakamlar çalışmada veri olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada podcast ve audio yayıncılığı üzerine yapılmış çalışmalar incelenmiş, literatür taraması yapılmış ve güncel veriler bir araya getirilerek bir durum analizi yapılmıştır. Çalışmada yeni bir iletişim aracı olarak ortaya çıkan podcastlerin ortaya çıkış ve gelişme aşamaları, ekonomik değer kazanma süreçleri anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır.
