Evaluation of the Effect of Arcus Pedis Differences on Balance in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Abstract
Purpose: In this study, the effect of arcus pedis differences on balance in children with cerebral palsy was investigated and it was examined whether there were differences compared to healthy children. Material and Methods: In this study, 15 children with hemiplegic type cerebral palsy with normal foot arch, 15 children with hemiplegic type cerebral palsy with pes planus deformity, 15 healthy children with normal foot arch and 15 healthy children with pes planus deformity, aged between 7-10 years, were included. Results: In children with hemiplegic type cerebral palsy, a significant decrease was found in the tandem stance position, standing on one leg, reaching forward with arms stretched and total score values of the paediatric balance scale compared to healthy children (p<0.05). Between both groups of children with hemiplegic type cerebral palsy, a significant decrease was found in the value of standing on one leg in those with pes planus deformity (p<0.05), while no significant difference was found in other gains (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our results revealed that the arcus longitudinalis medialis should be evaluated in detail and appropriate compensatory techniques should be applied to those with pes planus deformity in improving the balance level of children with cerebral palsy.

Serebral Palsili Çocuklarda Arcus Pedis Farklılıklarının Denge Üzerine Etkisinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract
Amaç: Bu çalışmada serebral palsili çocuklarda arcus pedis farklılıkların denge üzerine etkisi araştırılarak sağlıklı çocuklara göre farklılıkların olup olmadığı incelenmiştir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Yaşları 7-10 yıl arasında değişen, 15 hemiplejik tip serebral palsili normal ayak arkusuna sahip çocuk, 15 hemiplejik tip serebral palsili pes planus deformitesine sahip çocuk, 15 sağlıklı normal ayak arkusuna sahip çocuk ve 15 sağlıklı pes planus deformitesi olan çocuk araştırmaya dahil edilmiştir. Çalışmada denge düzeyini değerlendirmek ve karşılaştırmak için, pediatrik denge skalası kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar: Hemiplejik tip serebral palsili çocuklarda, sağlıklı çocuklara göre pediatrik denge skalasının tandem duruş pozisyonu, tek ayak üzeri durma, kollar gergin ileriye doğru uzanma kazanımları ve toplam skor değerlerinde anlamlı düzeyde azalma tespit edilmiştir (p<0,05). Hemiplejik tip serebral palsili çocukların oluşturduğu her iki grup arasında, pes planus deformitesi olanlarda tek ayak üzeri durma kazanım değerinde anlamlı azalma tespit edilirken (p<0,05), diğer kazanımlarda anlamlı fark tespit edilmemiştir (p>0,05). Tartışma: Sonuçlarımız, serebral palsili çocukların denge düzeyinin geliştirilmesinde arcus longitudinalis medialis’in detaylı olarak değerlendirilerek pes planus deformitesi tespit edilenlere uygun telafi edici tekniklerin uygulanması gerektiğini ortaya koymuştur.
