Clericis Laicos'tan Anagni Aşağılanması'na, Papa VIII. Bonifacius-Kral IV. Philippe Çatışması

Abstract

1294 yılında Benedict Gaetani, papa olarak seçildi ve kendisi Bonifacius ismini aldı. Onun Papalık dönemini karakterize eden olay Fransa kralı ile girdiği çatışmadır. Kavga, din adamlarının vergilendirmesi ile başladı ve papa bu eylemin önüne geçmek için 1296 yılında Clericis laicos’u deklare etti. Ferman İngiltere ve Fransa krallarını eşit derecede muhatap almasına rağmen tepki Fransa’dan geldi. Kutuplaşmaya Roma’nın önemli bir aristokratik kılanı olan Colonnaların mücadeleleri de eklendi. Colonnalar papa ile girdikleri mücadeleyi kaybederek, Fransa’ya sığındılar ve kral üzerinden papaya muhalefet etmeyi sürdürdüler. Bonifacius’un sert tabiatı işleri daha da zorlaştırdı. Papa, Papalığın üstünlüğünü ve ayrıcalığını monarşilere kabul ettirmek idealindeydi. Fransa kralı ise bağımsız, özgür bir Fransız ulusu tasarımındaydı. Kavganın devamını Unam sanctam izledi. Papa, kralı Apostolik Makama ve kendisine tabi olmaya davet etti. Sonrasında kralı aforoz etti ve onun güç temellerine saldırdı. Philippe ise papanın eylemlerine Anagni’de bir komplo hazırlayarak karşılık verdi.
Anagni Aşağılanması olarak bilinen olay neticesinde papa Bonifacius esir alındı. Üç gün tutsak kaldıktan sonra kurtarıldı. Papa Anagni’den Roma’ya geçti ve birkaç gün sonra öldü. Onun ölümü VII. Gregorius’tan beri başarılı bir şekilde sürdürülen Papalık üstünlüğünün son bulması demekti. Anagni olayı ve peşine papanın ölümü, Orta Çağ Papalık monarşinin yıkımı anlamına gelmekteydi.
