Abstract

COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND EATING HABITS LOCKDOWN EFFECT

Year 2023, Volume: 32 Issue: 2, 237 - 243, 04.08.2023

Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effect of the lock down brought following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which started in 2019, on nutritional habits. The data of the cross-sectional descriptive study conducted with individuals between the ages of 18-65 living in Turkey were collected using an online questionnaire. With the questionnaire form, the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and the frequency of food consumption before the pandemic and during the lock down were questioned. The data were analyzed with IBM SPSS 22 program. It was determined that the average age of the research group was 32.5±9.7, 75.1% of them were women and 50.1% of them lived in the Eastern Anatolia region.46.5% of the participants stated that the ireating habits changed during the lock down process introduced with the pandemic. It has been found that the consumption of meat, legumes, dairy and vegetables/fruits is consumed more often during the lock down (p<0.05). Fast-food consumption decreased (p<0.05), but packed snacks consumed more frequently in lock down period (p>0.05). It was determined that those who did not do regular sports (73.9%) before the pandemic increased (85.2%) during the lock down (p<0.05). According to the results, it has been seen that healthy consumption habits of participants improved, however tended to consume snacks more frequently. Un healthy eating habits and sedentary life style affect the course of non-communicable diseases as well as infectious diseases. Forth is reason, the importance of developing healthy eating behaviors in the effective fight against infectious diseases should be kept in mind.
