Saint Augustine’s adventure into Christianism in his Confessiones (Confessions) has certain philosophical implications concerning the problem of knowing the self and God. In this sense, Augustine has a significant position in the development of the concept of the self which is frequently used in the contemporary practices of social science and philosophy. He does not just maintain ancient Greek philosophical heritage with a Christian conception of God, but also, unlike Greeks, does not put reason on the basis for both the human order and the divine order but will. Thus, the problem of knowing the self, first, should engage with the problem of willing. That is to say that intelligentia (understanding), one of the forces of the soul, is attached to another force, i.e., voluntas (will). The third and last force of the soul, memoria (memory) is the place where one would head for searching both oneself and God. Then how can it be possible to know oneself and God? How do the self and God relate to each other?
