Richard Rorty and Hans-Georg Gadamer are influential philosophers in contemporary philosophy. However, it can be said that their influence is due to their giving a central place to language in their philosophies. Rorty and Gadamer, in their philosophy of language, essentially adopt the understanding of language games as formulated by the later Wittgenstein, in which meaning is formulated as use. However, Rorty and Gadamer have expanded the scope of language games by taking them far beyond the meaning given by Wittgenstein. This scope given to language has shown that the problem of the language-world relationship can be approached differently from traditional paradigms. In Rorty and Gadamer, the world or reality is dealt with as a problem arising in the activities of describing or interpreting human beings. This article focuses on how Rorty and Gadamer deal with the language-world/reality relationship in their philosophy of language and tries to clarify the issue of whether this approach can offer new possibilities for philosophy.
