Abstract

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the maximal oxygen consumption of dancers and to investigate physiological loading during dancing. Nine female dancers aged 25.0±2.2 and 6 male dancers aged 28.5±6.2 participated in this study. Maximal oxygen consumption was measured using maximal exercise test (Bruce Protocol) by means of portable telemetry system (Cosmed K4). On the other day, oxygen consumption, maximal heart rate and respiratory exchange rate (R) were recorded during the 4 minutes series of dance. The significance of the differences was analysed using Wilcoxon tests. A significantly difference was found in maximal heart rates and R values (p<0.05) between maximal exercise test and dance both in female and male dancers. But there was no significant difference between maximal oxygen consumptions and peak oxygen consumptions during dancing (p>0.05). The findings of this investigation suggest that modern dancers' oxygen consumptions during dancing were very close to their maximal capacities and females were subjected to similar physiological loading with the males.
