Abstract
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a rare situation in childhood. Many conditions and diseases can cause
upper gastrointestinal bleeding. In Turkey, Malva sylvestris (common mallow) is popularly consumed
among the people for various reasons. Malvaceae family is generally considered to be safe for use. Upper
gastrointestinal bleeding connected to the Malva Sylvestris (Common mallow) have not been reported in
literature yet. Five years old male patient was admitted to our hospital emergency department with hematemesis. Situation was diagnosed as upper gastrointestinal bleeding and patient was hospitalized.
During his stay in our clinic, we found no other underlying reasons that could cause upper gastrointestinal
bleeding in a child except his story of drinking common mallow tea prepared by his mother. Common mallow
should be extensively researched for its effects and side effects. Commonly used herbal infusions among
folks might yield unexpected results on children. For this reason, caution and awareness should be raised
among folks for use of herbal infusions in children.
