Abstract
Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine the views of mothers on play and play materials and their behaviors of playing interactive games with their children.
Method: The research was conducted with a mixed method in which quantitative and qualitative methods were used together. 20 mothers with children between 18-36 months participated in the study. Data were collected with the “Demographic Information Form’’, “PIKOLO/Parent-Child Interaction Observation Form’’ and “Semi-Structured Interview Form’’. Data analyzes were evaluated using SPSS and MAXQDA programs.
Results: 45% (n=9) of the mothers are 36 years of age or older, 65% (n=13) are university graduates, and 55% (n=11) are employed. It was found that the scores obtained from the sub-dimensions of PIKOLO were not statistically significantly different according to the age of the mothers. According to the education level of the mothers, the scores obtained in Encouragement and Teaching dimensions were high and there was a statistically significant difference. According to the working status of the mothers, the scores obtained in Sensitivity, Encouragement and Teaching dimensions were found to be high and there was a statistically significant difference. It has been determined that mothers generally have a positive feeling about the play and they buy a lot of play materials for their children to play.
Conclusion: It has been concluded that mothers' educational status and working status have an effect on their positive parenting skills in interactive play behaviors of mothers with their children, mothers generally have a positive attitude towards play, but they need support in choosing play materials.
