Effect of Scenario-Based Simulation Method on Self-Efficacy Perception Levels of Students
Objective: It was aimed to determine the effect of scenario-based simulation method on self-efficacy perceptions of nursing students. Material and Method: This study, which has a semi-experimental design, was carried out with 129 students who were attending Fundamentals of Nursing course and who participated in the basic nursing skills laboratory and studied in the 2017-2018 academic year in Faculty of Health Sciences in Izmir Kâtip Çelebi University. Scenario-based simulation method was used in the practice of Fundamentals of Nursing Skill laboratory in this study. Self-efficacy perception levels of the students were determined before and after the laboratory practice. Descriptive statistics in the analysis of data; “paired samples t test” to analyse the difference between two means were used. Findings: It was determined that the mean score of the nursing students’ obtained from self-efficacy scale before and after the laboratory practice were 71.50±11.23 and 74.43±10.22, respectively. It was determined that scenario-based simulation method used in basic nursing skills training contributed to the increase of self-efficacy perceptions significantly (p< .001). Conclusion: In the study, scenariobased simulation method integrated into basic nursing skills laboratory was found to provide a significant increase in self-efficacy perception level of the students. Positive feedbacks were received from students regarding the use of this method in laboratory training. In this context, it was concluded that integrating the scenario-based simulation method into the basic nursing skills training will significantly increase the students’ selfefficacy perception and contribute to the students being ready for clinical environment.
