Determination of Rates of Breast Milk Pumping of Postpartum Mothers and Affecting Factors

Year 2023, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 123 - 129, 31.01.2023

Abstract

Objective: This descriptive study was carried out to determine the breast milk expression rates of mothers and the affecting factors.
Materials and Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was completed between January and December 2019 with a total of 304 mothers in Family Health Centers in a province in Eastern Turkey, where the population density is high. Research data were collected through a questionnaire prepared by the researcher. The data was evaluated using a percentile, mean, chi-square test, and t-test.
Results: It has been observed that 62.8% of the mothers had previous experience with milking, 66.2% of them expressed milk 0-3 times a day, 36.8% of them had previously received training on milking, and 54.1% of them preferred an electric breast pump in milking method. When asked about the reason for expressing milk, it was determined that the most common answer (35.1%) was to keep ready milk in the cupboard when going to work or far away. It was found that 78.4% of the mothers expressed breastmilk in a bottle, and 54.2% stated that they had the opportunity to take a break to express breast milk at work. In addition, the duration of exclusive breastfeeding for their babies was 3.09±2.16, the average duration of breast milk pumping was 0.46±1.08 months, and the average duration of breast milk pumping once a day was 3.77±7.59 minutes. It was determined that there was a significant difference between the age, education, and employment status of the mother and the milking behavior (p<0.05) and between the age of the mother and the duration of breast milk pumping once a day (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It has been determined that the majority of the mothers have experience in milking, and the mother’s age, education, and employment status have an effect on breast milking behavior.

Doğum Sonu Dönemdeki Annelerin Anne Sütü Sağma Oranları ve Etkileyen Faktörler

Year 2023, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 123 - 129, 31.01.2023
