JULIAN BARNES’S BEFORE SHE MET ME AS A STUDY OF LITOST

Öz

Julian Barnes has always been a novelist of wide
interests, and as a novelist he has been fond of experimenting on new themes in
a variety of structures which are completely different from one another. In his
1982 novel, Before She Met Me Barnes
presents us a black comedy on the theme of sexual jealousy experienced by
otherwise a very sensible, normal and successful professor of history. However,
this time the past he relentlessly studies and searches is his own wife’s past.
As we read the story, mainly focusing on the consciousness of Graham Hendrick,
the protagonist, we see that “the times before she met him”, in other words
“her past”, start to take hold of the whole present of Graham and turns his
life into a nightmare.  As a historian he
does his research in a most academic precision and rigor and cannot find a cure
for his obsession. The novel illustrates how sexual jealousy, the Othello
within or our bestial side can capture our sensible, conscious, civilized self
and transforms our brain into a blood thirst animal’s brain once libidinal
instincts become our main drives. This paper will offer a reading and analysis
of this phenomenon from Milan Kundera’s concept of litost which is a state of torment created by the
sudden sight of one's own misery, an emotion formed of jealousy, melancholy, pity, ressentiment and
revenge.

Julian Barnes çok geniş ilgi alanları olan bir
romancıdır ve eserlerinde yeni tema ve biçimleri deneyimlemeyi hep sevmiştir.
1982 yılında kaleme aldığı Benimle
Tanışmadan Önce’de Barnes normalde son derece mantıklı, normal ve başarılı
bir tarih profesörünün yaşadığı cinsel kıskançlık duygusunu kara mizah tavrıyla
sunar. Tarih profesörünün çalışmakta olduğu geçmiş artık kendi karısının
geçmişi olur. Roman, ana karakter Graham Hendrick’in bilincine odaklanır ve biz
okudukça Graham’ın karısının onunla tanışmadan öncesinin, geçmişinin Graham’ın
tüm şimdiki zamanını nasıl ele geçirdiğini ve yaşamını nasıl bir kabusa
çevirdiğini izleriz. Graham, karısının geçmişini bir tarihçi titizliğiyle
akademik araştırma yaparcasına disiplinle araştırmaya başlar. Roman cinsel
kıskançlığın, insanın içinde saklı olan Othello’nun, insanın hayvansal yanının
nasıl olup da onun mantıklı, bilinçli, medeni benliğini ele geçirdiğini ve
kişiyi nasıl kana susamış bir hayvana, ilkel güdülerle ve libido kaynaklı
itkilerle davranan bir kişiye dönüştürdüğünü merceğe alır. Bu çalışma cinsel
kıskançlık olgusunu Milan Kundera’nın litost
adını verdiği “kişinin kendi sefilliğinin farkına vardığı anlarda” duyduğu
kıskançlık, melankoli, acıma, eziklik ve intikam duygularının karışımı olan
kavram ışığında ele alacaktır.
