Abstract

The Predictive Role of Emotional Awareness Dimensions on Self-Esteem, Social Anxiety and Depression Levels of University Students

Year 2019, Volume: 20 Issue: 3, 876 - 890, 31.12.2019

Abstract

The purpose of the
study was to examine the extent to which the dimensions of emotional awareness
(emotional attention, emotional clarity, and emotional repair) predicted
self-esteem, social anxiety, and depression levels of university students. The
sample of the study consisted of 801 (502 female, 299 male) undergraduate
students enrolled in different faculties of a state university. Four
instruments, namely “Trait Meta-Mood Scale”, “Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale”,
“Interaction Anxiousness Scale” and “Beck Depression Inventory” were used in
the study. Correlational analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to
analyze the data. The results of the analyses indicated that emotional
attention, emotional clarity, and emotional repair significantly predicted both
self-esteem and depression among university students. Moreover, the results
revealed that emotional clarity and emotional repair were the significant
predictors of social anxiety, while there was no any significant relationship
between emotional attention and social anxiety. Implications of the findings
were discussed and some suggestions were made for further research.
