THE IMPROVEMENT OF POLYSTYRENE SURFACE PROPERTIES WITH UV CURING HYBRID SOL METHOD

Abstract

Polystyrene
(PS) quickly turns yellow when exposed to UV light in the atmosphere and
gradually undergoes embrittlement. For this reason, UV curing sol gel coating
works are continuing rapidly in order to improve the properties of PS. In this
study, it is aimed to develop UV-curable hybrid sol gel coating to improve the
surface properties of PS against chemical degradation problem. Color and gloss
measurements, hardness, FT-IR and SEM analysis were performed before and after
the yellowing test for the original and UV curable hybrid sol gel coated PS
plates. As a result, the surface properties of PS plates coated with hybrid
sol-gel prepared using 0.5 g of Al2O3 inorganic compound were showed a
significant improvement.

UV KÜRLENDİRİLMİŞ HİBRİD SOL JEL YÖNTEMİYLE POLİSTİREN YÜZEY ÖZELLİKLERİNİN İYİLEŞTİRİLMESİ

Abstract

Polistiren
(PS) atmosfer ortamında UV ışığına maruz bırakıldığında hızlı bir şekilde
sararır ve kademeli olarak gevrekleşmeye uğrar. Bundan dolayı PS’nin
özelliklerinin iyileştirilmesi amacıyla UV kürlendirme sol gel kaplama alanında
çalışmalar hızla devam etmektedir. Bu çalışmada kimyasal bozunma problemine
karşı PS yüzey özelliklerini iyileştirmek amacıyla UV ile kürlenebilen hibrit
sol jel kaplamasının geliştirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Orijinal ve UV ile
kürlendirilmiş hibrit sol jel kaplanmış PS plakaların sararma testi öncesi ve
sonrasında renk ve parlaklık ölçümleri, sertlik, FT-IR ve SEM analizleri
gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak 0,5 g Al2O3 inorganik bileşiği kullanılarak
hazırlanmış hibrid sol-jel ile kaplanmış PS plakaların yüzey özelliklerinin önemli
ölçüde iyileştiği gözlenmiştir.
