Abstract
Objective: Cosmetic product; defines all substances and preparations which prepared to be applied to external parts of the human body such as epidermis, nails, hair, lips, and external genitalia; teeth and oral mucosa, whose sole or main purpose is to clean, smell, change their appearance, and/or correct and/or protect or keep these parts in good condition. This product group is used by individuals from almost every age group in society and should be delivered to consumers in an effective, safe, and high-quality way. Cosmetic products are included in the group of non-sterile pharmaceutical products. Water-based mixtures, protein-rich substances, vegetable or animal raw materials in the content of cosmetic products are suitable for microbial growth. In this review, the microbiological properties of cosmetic products in our country and the microbiological contaminations seen in cosmetic products were evaluated, and what should be done to prevent contamination was reviewed.
Result and Discussion: Studies have shown that cosmetic products are mostly contaminated during use by the consumer. The most important causes of contamination during use are the use of products after their expiration date, use by more than one person, wetting them with saliva, inserting fingers or contaminated drawings into them, and being in contact with air. Microorganisms that frequently cause contamination in cosmetic products are indicated as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter sp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, S. epidermidis, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus sp.
