CONSUMER PRIVACY IN INTERNET OF THINGS

Year 2017, Volume: 4 Issue: 3, 251 - 258, 30.09.2017
https://doi.org/10.17261/Pressacademia.2017.487

Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to examine privacy
from a consumer point of view and in relation to the Internet of Things.

Methodology- The concepts of Internet of Things
and consumer privacy are covered in this study. These two phenomena are
conceptually evaluated, and the relation between them are analyzed through
applications and examples.

Findings- The monitoring of people's daily
activities and recording of data about these activities cause concerns about
the privacy of personal data. Consumers are concerned about how and for what
purpose the data collected about them is being used.

Conclusion- Privacy concern can be an obstacle to consumers' adaptation to IoT
technologies. Moreover, it also affects consumers' attitudes towards a
particular product, brand or business. For this reason, all actors responsible
for the development of the IoT must be aware of the importance of consumer privacy.
These actors should show sensitivity to the protection of personal data and
consumer privacy as well.
