and deficiencies are seen in the etymological dictionaries of the Turkish
published until today. These are mentioned in various works. An independent
analysis on Old Turkic dictionaries in the light of the knowledge and
principles of modern etymology has not been done unfortunately. Sir Gerard
CLAUSON’s dictionary titled “An Etymological Dictionary of Pre-Thirteenth
Century Turkish” (1972) is a remarkable work. CLAUSON offers us a ‘probable
etymology’. In the article, the 128 entries of ‘probable etymology’ proposed by
him has been identified.
