CHANGE in PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY CONDITIONS OF ACADEMICS

Abstract

It is difficult to define what the content of academia is or how to do it best. For this study, academics is defined as a profession category that needs to be redefined with the neo-liberal period and which has new meanings beyond its familiar meanings, but which has been differentiated and will gradually differentiate with its declining aspects. The traditional patterns of academics as a professional form are being forced to break as a natural consequence of the process in which the university begins to transform and its meaning begins to change with the transformation of modernity. Similarly, in the globalizing world, academics who are caught between the local and the global context have difficulties in determining the center of gravity (education or research) of the notion of professional change. On the other hand, the spread of mass education as a norm increases the coefficient of change. Another development that complicates this situation is that universities, which are caught in the grip of the business world and the government, have become market-based institutions positioned to compete on a world scale. While narrowing the budgets with the problem of public finances pushes universities to act like companies, they also make them open to the oversight and monitoring of control mechanisms. Apart from these external conditions, the most profound change that challenges academics is the change in the level of knowledge in the world of science. In this study, the effects of these versatile changes in the professional conditions of the academician on his professional identity are discussed in the context of employment, staff and career and academic work. The aim of the study is to be able to look at the working life of academics, who display different views with the transformation of higher education organization, from the perspective of professional identity.

Abstract

Akademisyenliğin içeriğinin ne olduğuna ya da nasıl en iyi yapılacağına dair bir tanımlama yapmak zordur. Bu çalışma için akademisyenlik, neo-liberal dönemle birlikte yeniden tanımlanması gereken ve bilindik anlamlarının ötesinde yeni karşılıklar yüklenen ama bir taraftan eksilen yönleri ile farklılaşmış ve giderek farklılaşacak bir meslek kategorisi olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Mesleki bir form olarak akademisyenliğin geleneksel kalıpları üniversitenin modernitenin dönüşümüyle birlikte dönüşmeye ve anlamının değişmeye başladığı sürecin doğal bir sonucu olarak kırılmaya zorlanmaktadır. Benzer şekilde küreselleşen dünyada yerel ve küresel bağlam arasında kalan akademisyenler, mesleki değişim nosyonunun ağırlık merkezini belirleme (eğitim mi araştırma mı) noktasında sıkıntı yaşamaktadırlar. Diğer yandan kitle eğitiminin bir norm olarak yaygınlaşması değişimin katsayısını artırmaktadır. İş dünyası ve hükümet kıskacında kalan üniversitelerin, dünya ölçeğinde rekabet etmek üzere konumlandırılan piyasa merkezli kurumlar haline gelmesi bu durumu güçleştiren bir diğer gelişme olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Kamu finansman sorunu ile bütçelerin daraltılması üniversiteleri birer şirket gibi davranmaya iterken, aynı zamanda onları kontrol mekanizmalarının gözetimine ve izlemesine açık hale getirmektedir. Bu dışsal koşulların haricinde akademisyenliğe meydan okuyan en derin değişme, bilim dünyasında bilginin konumlandırıldığı düzeyde yaşanan değişim ile ilgili yaşanmaktadır. Bu çalışma ile akademisyenin mesleki koşullarındaki bu çok yönlü değişimlerin onun mesleki kimliğine olan etkileri, istihdam, kadro ve kariyer ve akademik işi bağlamında ele alınmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, yükseköğretim örgütlenmesinin dönüşmesiyle birlikte farklı görünümler sergileyen akademisyenlerin içinde bulundukları çalışma hayatına mesleki kimlik penceresinden bakabilmektir.
