Abstract

Year 2025, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 7 - 19, 15.03.2025

Abstract

Social workers, who provide multifaceted services at micro, mezzo and macro levels to ensure the welfare of their clients, generally work with disadvantaged groups who are left behind in society for various reasons. While working with these groups, the empathy that the expert establishes with the clients as a professional skill may cause compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue refers to physical, emotional and spiritual burnout resulting from working with people who experience significant emotional pain and physical stress. This study aims to examine the relationship between the different social service areas (different disadvantaged individuals and groups) in which social workers work and their compassion fatigue. For the purpose of the study; two types of data collection tools were used: Personal Information Form and Compassion Fatigue Scale. A total of 124 social workers, 76.6% of whom were women, participated in the study. Based on the responses to the Compassion Fatigue Scale, it was concluded that the participants had a low level of compassion fatigue (mean=3.58, ss=1.91). In the study, it was concluded that the compassion fatigue levels of social workers differed according to the reasons for choosing the profession, F (2,121) = 3.07, p = .049 < .05, and did not show a significant difference according to other variables included in the study, especially working areas.
