The Gnostic (al-‘arif) and the divine guide (al-murshid) are the most significant terms of tasawwuf. ‘Arif is someone who knows Allah in the light of Islamic sources and lives apropriate for the sake of Allah. As for murshid is someone who introduces Allah to people by the way of al-‘ilm (knowledge), al-‘irfan (gnosis), and his behavior and guides people to walk along sirat al-mustaqim (the straight path). Mawlana gives Abu al-Hasan al-Kharaqani many attributes and mentions him by admiring with many praises. Furthermore, Mawlana gives his some gnostic messages by telling two stories related with Kharaqani. One of this stories is about the harbinger of Bayazid Bestami, the owaisi sheikh of Kharaqâni, the birth of him while he was going through Kharaqan. And other is the famous story about a murid of Kharaqâni and his grumpy wife. In these stories, It is mentioned that how Kharakani had a supreme disposition, character, and morality and how reached the martaba-i âlī (divine level) by training his nafs (self), in short, the value of his gnostic knowledge and the method of guidance are explained in Mathnawi. In this article, the sageness and mastership of Kharaqani will be explained in the frame of the Mathnawi’s couplets and two stories about him by means of Ahmed Avni Konuk’s commentary.
