Abstract

Abstract
The environmental crisis and the climate crisis in the foreground are among the main topics of discussion today and in the future. In the midst of the environmental and climate crisis, there is a need for the media to raise public awareness to support sustainable practices and policies. Because environmental problems are increasing worldwide, and the media has an important role to play in initiating public debate by drawing attention to environmental problems. Therefore, there is great potential for environmental issues to reach wider audiences through news content. This study aims to reveal how news about forest fires is presented in the media through content analysis methods. When the data obtained as a result of the research are evaluated, it is seen that the media attributes a “hot news” value to forest fires only when they occur. It is also determined that solution proposals and risk factors, which are important criteria for preventing forest fires and minimizing their effects, are mentioned at a very low rate in the news texts. The results of the research reveal that the media cannot look at forest fires with a qualified eye required by science journalism in general and environmental journalism in particular.
