This article seeks to examine the historical adventure of educational activities in
Giresun, basically covering the years 1397-1920. During the classical period, the
educational activities in Giresun continued with the great contributions of dervish
lodges, especially through the teacher’s training schools, [ET2]primary schools, friday
mosques [ET3]and madrasahs. During the modernization process that started with
Tanzimat, secondary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools in Giresun
were influenced by this moderation and innovation processes. [ET4]Non-Muslim
children living in Giresun were involved in educational [ET5]activities through their
own establishments. The perception of "there is no madrasa culture in Giresun", which
is sometimes expressed among the people, became invalid by the identification of the
madrasas whose numbers exceed 100.[ET6]
