Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of patients in a Turkish subpopulation about dental implant treatment. Method: The multiple-choice standardized questionnaire was applied to patients older than 18 years of age who applied to oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics of Mersin University, Adıyaman University and Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Dentistry for any reason. The data were analysed with the SPSS program. Results: Out of 1354 participants, 1215 complete the survey. 599 of 1215 patients were male (49.3%) and 616 of them were female (50.7%). The majority of the participants were between the ages of 20-30 (34%) and most had university (43.5%) education levels. Only 60.5% of the participants were aware of dental implant treatment The source of information for the vast majority of these participants was dentists. Only 39.1% of the participants stated that they would prefer dental implant treatment, when they were asked which treatment they would prefer for their missing teeth. 6.9% of the participants believed that the dental implant would prevent MRI, 4% would prevent tomography and 7.7% would beep when passing through metal detector. Conclusion: This study showed that the level of awareness about dental implant treatment has increased in Turkish society, but it is still limited and detailed information is lacking. Therefore, more organized training programs are needed to correct misinformation and provide more information about dental implant treatment.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı bir Türk subpopulasyonundaki hastaların dental implant tedavisi ile ilgili farkındalıklarını ve bilgilerini değerlendirmektir. Yöntem: Bu anket çalışması 2019 yılında yapılmıştır. Çoktan seçmeli standardize edilmiş anket, Mersin Üniversitesi, Adıyaman Üniversitesi ve Aydın Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültelerinin Ağız, Diş ve Çene Cerrahisi kliniklerine herhangi bir nedenle başvuran 18 yaşından büyük hastalara uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler SPSS programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: 1354 katılımcıdan 1215’i anketi tamamladı. 1215 hastanın 599’si erkek (%49.3) ve 616’si kadındı (%50,7). Katılımcılar en fazla 20-30 yaş aralığındaydı (%34) ve çoğu üniversite düzeyinde (%43.5) eğitim seviyesine sahipti. Ankete katılan katılımcıların sadece %60.5’inin dental implant tedavisinden haberdar olduğu saptandı. Ankete katılan katılımcıların büyük çoğunluğunun bilgi kaynağının diş hekimleri olduğu belirlendi. Hastalara eksik dişleri için hangi tedaviyi tercih edecekleri sorulduğunda katılımcılardan sadece %39.1’inin dental implant tedavisini tercih edeceği saptandı. Dental implant uygulaması ile ilgili olarak katılımcıların %6.9’u dental implantların MR çekilmesine, %4’ü tomografi çekilmesine engel olacağını ve %7.7’si ise metal detektöründe öteceğini belirtti. Sonuç: Bu çalışma Türk toplumunda dental implant tedavisi ile ilgili farkındalık düzeyinin artmasına rağmen hala sınırlı olduğunu ve ayrıntılı bilgilerin ise eksik olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu nedenle dental implant uygulaması hakkında daha fazla bilgi sağlamak ve yanlış bilgileri düzeltmek için daha organize eğitim programlarının düzenlenmesi gereklidir.

MEU Journal of Health Sciences Assoc was began to the publishing process in 2008 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Gönül Aslan, Editor-in-Chief, and affiliated to Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences. In March 2015, Prof. Dr. Caferi Tayyar Şaşmaz undertook the Editor-in Chief position and since then he has been in charge.
Publishing in three issues per year (April - August - December), it is a multisectoral refereed scientific journal. In addition to research articles, scientific articles such as reviews, case reports and letters to the editor are published in the journal. Our journal, which has been published via e-mail since its inception, has been published both online and in print. Following the Participation Agreement signed with TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM Dergi Park in April 2015, it has started to accept and evaluate online publications.
