Abstract

Hatırlamak, mekânların ve nesnelerin de dâhil olduğu bir süreçtir. Mekânın, hatırlama açısından önemi, travmatik olaylarda özellikle belirginleşir. Bu noktadan yola çıkarak bu makalede, mekân ve kolektif bellek arasındaki ilişki, Sivas Katliamı’nda yakınları öldürülen kişilerin Madımak Oteli’ne dair deneyimlerini temel alarak incelenmektedir. Bu amaçla, on kişiyle derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiş ve Madımak Oteli önündeki bir anmada katılımlı gözlem yapılmıştır. Makalede, bu görüşmelerden ve gözlemlerden hareketle, ilk olarak, tüm grubun mekânla (Madımak Oteli) kurduğu ilişki ele alınmıştır. Sonraki kısımda da, grup içerisindeki farklı bellek çerçeveleri, bir travma mekânı olarak Madımak Oteli ile olan ilişki bağlamında değerlendirilmiştir.

Place and Collective Memory: Sivas Massacre and Madımak Hotel

Abstract

Remembering is a process which involves places and objects. The importance of place for remembering becomes evident especially on traumatic cases. In this regard, this article examines the relationship between place and collective memory based on the experiences of individuals who lost their family members in Sivas Massacre at Madımak Hotel. To that end, in-depth interviews with ten people were conducted and commemoration on the anniversary of the massacre in front of the Madımak Hotel were participately observed. First of all, the relationship of the whole group with the place (Madımak  Hotel) was analysed through these interviews and observations. Then, different memory frames among the group was evaluated in the context of the relationship with Madımak hotel as a trauma site.
