Abstract

Aromatherapy is one of the therapies that use essential oils as therapeutic agents to prevent and treat various diseases among complementary medicine practices. Essential oils are secondary metabolites usually obtained by distillation from various parts of aromatic plants. To protect and restore the natural balance of the body on a physical and psychological level, it shows its effect with the sense of smell, ie inhalation, as well as massage, compress, and bath applications. Aromatherapy has a history of about 6000 years, dating back to the ancient Egyptian civilization. Each essential oil used in aromatherapy has its scent and therapeutic properties. In aromatherapy, essential oils are used in various combinations in the treatment of many diseases such as psychological disorders (anxiety, depression, attention and concentration problems, insomnia), digestive problems, headaches, muscle and joint pains, respiratory tract infections, and skin ailments (wounds, burns, alopecia, eczema). Among the essential oils used in aromatherapy, those with antiviral and antimicrobial properties are tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils; chamomile, lavender, lemon and rose essential oils for anxiety, depression, insomnia and concentration problems; frankincense essential oil for asthma and shortness of breath, and peppermint essential oil for migraine. Essential oils are considered safe to use with minimal side effects. However, aromatherapy applications are performed externally and essential oils are not used internally in this form of therapy. With this study, in today's healthcare, the most used essential oils and their properties in aromatherapy applications are reviewed.
