Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the level of hopelessness and depressive symptoms among nursing students and to investigate their relationship with sociodemographic variables.
Material and Methods: The sample of descriptive research consisted of 204 nursing students. Personal Information Form, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Scale were used to collect the data of the study.
Results: Beck Depression Inventory score average of the students in the study was determined as 12.725±5.885 and the average score of Beck Hopelessness Scale was 4.833±4.180. The difference between the Beck Depression Inventory mean scores of the nursing department students according to their gender, course achievement perception, feeling alone and having problems with their friends was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The difference between the Beck Hopelessness Scale mean scores of the participants according to gender, perception of course success, feeling alone and relationship with the family was found statistically significant (p<0.05). A moderate positive correlation was found between Beck Depression Inventory scores and Beck Hopelessness Scale scores (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was concluded that there was a difference between the levels of hopelessness and depression among nursing students in terms of gender, perception of course success, feeling alone, interpersonal relationship status, and there was a relationship between students' depression and hopelessness levels. This study is important for revising nursing education so that students can become healthy individuals and nurses who can provide quality care.
