Aim
Monocyte / HDL-Cholesterol ratio is an inflammatory marker. In this study, while the body mass index categories of the individuals who consulted diet outpatient clinic were grouped to underweighed, healthy, overweighed and obese; obesity was divided into 4 subgroups and it was aimed to see if there was a difference in vitamin D levels and also monocyte / HDL-Cholesterol ratio among all groups.
Materials and Methods
The medical records of people who attended to the outpatient nutrition clinic for the first time at the XXXX Hospital within the month of April were reviewed retrospectively. The attendees were grouped according to their body mass index. Monocyte counts, HDL-Cholesterol and vitamin D levels were found from the records. Monocyte / HDL-Cholesterol ratio was calculated for each person. Descriptive analyzes, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H tests were used. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. Approval of the Regional Clinical Research Ethics Committee was obtained (23/07/2019, 1364). Informed consent form was taken from the patients.
Results
The HDL-Cholesterol means of healthy group were significantly higher than the groups with higher body mass index (p < 0.05). Monocyte means of men and HDL-Cholesterol means of women were significantly higher than the other gender (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in monocyte / HDL-Cholesterol ratio means between body mass index groups (p > 0.05). Vitamin D means of morbid obese and super obese people were significantly lower than the means of normal and overweight groups (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
In this study, monocyte / HDL-Cholesterol ratio doesn’t seem as an inflammatory marker for obesity. It should be keep in mind that vitamin D may be low in obese people.
